Moving home can seem like a daunting task with so many aspects to consider, but with careful planning it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. We’ve put together a moving home checklist to help you keep track of essential tasks and make your move as stress-free as possible. Follow our tips and you can spend less time thinking about what needs to be done in your old home, and more time day dreaming about life in your beautiful new home!
Set a Date
The first step when planning a move is to pick your moving date. Take into account when your new home will be ready, when your current home needs to be vacated and make sure to allow yourself enough time to execute the move smoothly and without having to rush.
Arrange Professional Cleaning
Now you have a moving out date, arrange for your current home to be professionally cleaned as soon as you move out. This will save you the time, energy and stress of having to clean the house yourself after a tiring move.
Book Your Removalist
If you’re doing the move yourself then now is the time to arrange a hire truck. If you’re using professional movers, then ask them to estimate the number of boxes you might have to help you organise your packing materials.
Keep, Chuck, Donate
It’s time to get sorting! Go through your home room by room and decide what you’ll be keeping and what you no longer need. Valuable items can be sold, whilst old clothes, toys and books can be donated to family, friends or charity. Be strict with yourself – moving into your beautiful, newly-built home is an opportunity to start fresh without a lifetime of unnecessary papers, broken crockery or never-worn clothes to clutter up your living space.
As well as collecting or ordering packing boxes, make sure to get packing tape and marker pens so boxes can be properly labelled. A few weeks before the move you can start packing things which are unlikely to be needed such as seasonal clothes, books and non-essential kitchen items. Dismantle any furniture that isn’t used regularly and tape small parts, screws and cords to the item to ensure they can’t be lost.
Pack a ‘First Day’ Bag
In the last few days before you move, pack an overnight bag for the big day with all the essentials you need to make the day run smoothly. Include a change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, medicines, entertainment for the kids and make sure to take lots of snacks to keep your energy up over a long day!
The Big Day
This is it! Empty your fridge and freezer into an Esky, collect together all keys for doors, gates, garage etc. and leave them in an obvious place and then you’re done! Organise unpacking at your new home by allocating people different tasks. Plan ahead for lunch and dinner, whether you pre-make meals or choose a local café to grab a quick bite between moving boxes. It’ll be a big day but at the end of it you get to spend your first night in your beautiful new home!
